The owners of Foxtrot Market announced that it is ceasing its retail operations in DC, as well as its locations across the country, "after much consideration and evaluation," effective as of Tuesday, April 23.
An announcement came months after Dom's Kitchen & Market and Foxtrot Market merged.
Not much notice was given, as the message was posted to the company's social media sites shortly after 12:30 p.m. on the day they shuttered the doors. The company's website is also now down.
The closure will impact all 33 Foxtrot corner store locations and a pair of Dom's grocery stores in the DC, Austin, Chicago areas.
In DC, Foxtrot had locations in Adams Morgan, Dupont, Farragut Square, Georgetown, Logan Circle, Mount Vernon, and the Navy Yard.
"This decision has not been made lightly, and we understand the impact it will have on you, our loyal customers, as well as our dedicated team members," they wrote. "We understand that this news may come as a shock, and we apologize any inconvenience it may cause."
No details about the reasoning behind the closure was provided by the company, which saw sales soar during the pandemic, when the company capitalized on liquor and other deliveries while bars and restaurants were closed, according to Eater Chicago.
The news hit some customers hard, who were caught off-guard by the unexpected news of the closings.
"I think the most shocking part of this is that they're announcing a closure of 33 stores on the day of closure?!," one shopper posted on Twitter. "I had to doublecheck today's date."
Another added, "I'm heartbroken to hear you're closing. Always one of my favorite places to visit when I traveled."
"It has been our highest honor to elevate the everyday and create a remarkable shopping experience for people who love food as much as we do," Foxtrot's owners continued. "It has been a privilege serving you and being a part of your everyday lives.
"We understand that this news may come as a shock, and we apologize for any inconvenience it may cause."
